The first part of my journalism career often put me in the driver’s seat for front pages and special sections.
My penchant for high-impact layouts was often outside the comfort zone of my design and editing managers, so I had to show AND tell. From finding ways to illustrate an important story using only a police sketch to art directing photo illustrations, I had to convince newsroom decision-makers to give me the creative license I needed to create the visuals our excellent reporting deserved.
Well after I left page design in the rear-view, I applied those skills (and more) to a pro bono freelancing project for a community theater in another coverage area.
